EV FAQs.

We understand better than most that there are many questions you may need answering before switching to EV.

We are always delighted to answer your questions if you call in to our showroom, but here are just some that most people ask:

Q: I’m worried about the range, how far will it go before running out?

A: This is a common concern, but things have changed a lot in the last 12 months. Most new EVs will cover at least 160 miles on a charge, with some going over 300. For the Isle of Man it’s perfect, but you may be concerned about travelling across. The good news is that you can simply download an app with all the UK charging points on or some EVs will find the nearest for you using their Sat Nav system (over 30,000 charging stations now, more than there are petrol stations!) – and most newer EVs will only take around 30 mins to charge up to 80% at a fast charging station.

Q: How does the cost compare to petrol and diesel cars?

A: Currently, new EVs are generally more expensive than their petrol and diesel counterparts to buy. However, there are other costs and savings to take into account. For instance, for 10,000 miles per annum, a new Ford Fiesta (c£22,000 purchase price) vs a new electric Peugeot e208 (c£28,000) will cost you approx. £957 more to run every year at current fuel prices. EV charging with the Manx Utilities EV overnight charging discount, means an EV will cost around 2.4p per mile, with the Fiesta costing around 12.4p per mile! EVs also have much lower annual servicing costs and there are many buying/leasing options to help you spread the initial cost over the first few years of driving.

Q: I’m worried about the battery losing power over time.

A: Most new EVs now come with 8 year warranties and longer term test cars are already proving there is minimal loss of charge. Some manufacturer tests show over 90% capacity still after 200,000 miles! The technology is advancing at a rapid rate and it is expected that soon batteries will be able to be refurbished and even have their range extended easily and cost effectively.

Q: Are they more difficult to drive?

A: Come and find out for yourself! They are extremely easy to drive as they are all ‘automatics’ and most new models feature all the latest driver aids. You will notice how quiet and stress-free they are as well. And don’t think you can’t have fun too – rapid acceleration if you want it and great handling! But there really is nothing like trying for yourself, so arrange your no obligation test drive at Motor Mall now.
